ARC Review: THE LIPSTICK LAWS

The Book: THE LIPSTICK LAWS
The Author: Amy Holder
The Publisher: Graphia Books (an Imprint of Houghton Mifflin Harcourt)
Release Date: April 4, 2011

Summary:
April Bowers ranks so low on the social scale that the needle doesn't even move when she jumps on it.  New to Penford High last year, her only friend moves out of state just before the school year starts, leaving April without a single friend...really without anyone who even knows she exists.

When a stroke of luck--April isn't sure whether that luck is good or bad--lands her in the sight of queen-bee Brittany Taylor, April's popularity goes from zero to off the charts virtually over-night.  Problem is, April loathes Brittany, her snide remarks, and superior attitude, but the elevation in social rank is the most addictive drug out there.

Soon, April is anointed one of the chosen few, and the deal is sealed with the Lipstick Oath.  Just as quickly though, she falls out of Brittany's favor and is banished to the outer realms of misfit-dom.  April's not going to take this lying down.

No, now she's mad.  And, what do you do when some biatch double crosses you?  You guessed it, folks.  Get even.

My Take:
As we all know, I read just about anything and everything that crosses my reading path, but I'll be the first to tell you that I'm not huge on Sex in the City/Gossip Girl -esque reading material.  And, when I first saw this, I thought, Mean Girls.  Yes, there are some similarities here, but this is a fun, fast ride through the shark-infested waters that is high school popularity.

LIPSTICK LAWS is like chocolate.  Once you start nibbling on it, you will not be able to stop until the entire box is not only gone but licked clean.  From the first page I was snickering and nodding to myself as April confessed to her biggest insecurity and her solution.  Yes, friends.  April is a bosom sculptor (aka bra stuffer).  From there, we learn other priceless tidbits about her, her crush, the scariest of all scary teachers, and Lipstick Lawlords who ultimately wreak havoc on her life.

A highly recommended read for anyone looking for something fast-paced, contemporary, and has just enough teenage drama to keep you pinned to the edge of your seat.
